The Society was formed in 1983* by a group of
enthusiasts who were interested in reviving the bagpipes of the
Scottish lowlands and border
region. These pipes are bellows-blown with their drones issuing from a
common stock, and have been played in Scotland since at least the 17th
Century.
Over recent years, the Society has grown from being a group of
like-minded friends, to being a truly international organisation, with
members in many far flung places. There are now a number of well
established professional makers producing pipes of the highest quality,
and the instrument has been adopted by numerous folk groups.
*A note from Jeannie Campbell: "The Society was conceived in early 1981 but the official founding was 16th April 1983. The announcement at the time says 'After a couple of years of activity on an informal basis, the emergent Lowland and Border Pipers' Society was formally instituted at an enthusiastic and encouraging meeting in the College of Piping, Glasgow on Saturday April 16th.'"

by Pete Stewart
Welcome Home My Dearie tells the story of the bagpipe of the Scottish
Lowlands from its heyday in the late 17th century to its gradual
decline in the 19th century. Once known as ‘the common bagpipe’ but
later consigned to museum collections, displaced by its Great Highland
brother, its full history is told here for the first time.

LBPS NEWS LIST - A MESSAGE FROM
ANITA EVANS
MAILING LIST UNDER REVIEW
Firstly, thank you to all those who have responded to their invitations
and joined the recently set up Google Group for LBPS news and
announcements.
Up to now we have been using an online bulk mailing account to send
emails to the membership, allowing for speedy news updates and saving
paper and postage at the same time.
Increasingly there have been problems with this, including blocking by
certain Internet Service Providers and 'bouncing' or non-existent email
addresses etc.
My solution was to start a new, private, and announcement only mailing
list using Google Groups. Google Groups are well regulated, and give
members various options on how they wish to receive their emails, or
not as the case may be. The group is invitation only for extra
security.
Unfortunately I have had some negative feedback from those who have
received their initial invitation emails, including some who are either
unwilling to open a Google account, or have tried and found it
difficult or impossible to do so.
It seems I did not make it clear in the initial invitation that a
Google account was required, and for that I apologise, but the new
mailing list was set up with the best of intentions. The matter is now
under review and members will be notified when the LBPS committee have
decided on a satisfactory solution.
