Teaching Weekend Tutors Peebles 2016

All our tutors this year are new to the Teaching weekend, so we thought you might like to meet them. They represent some of the leading pipers of the younger generation and we are greatly looking forward to their contributions.

Alana MacInnes

Hailling from South Uist, Alana MacInnes is a piper and whistle player. She plays the highland pipes as well as the smallpipes. Alana completed an HNC in traditional music at Lews Castle College, Benbecula under the guidance of Anna-Wendy Stevenson and Iain MacDonald. Following this she then went on to acquire a Gàidhlig and Music degree at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s unique Gàidhlig college.

Alana is a regular teacher at various fèisean and at the Scots Music Group. She is currently playing with Scottish trio Canach with mostly self-penned tunes and songs. Together the trio have a range of performances under their belt and have supported many of Scotland’s leading musicians including the Simon Bradley Trio, Mairearad Green & Anna Massie and Kathleen MacInnes & Fiona Hunter. The trio have recently released a self titled EP. In 2014, Alana appeared at the 42nd Willie Clancy Summer School in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland.

David Shedden

David, now 23 [dec 2014], learned to play through lessons here at The National Piping Centre from the age of 9. Since those early days, David went on to study with many different pipers including piping legend, Donald MacPherson. He graduated this year in Scottish Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
David is a regular competitor at solo piping events throughout Scotland and enjoys considerable success. Over the last few years he has become a regular competitor at the prestigious Silver Medal competition at both the Northern Meeting and the Argyllshire Gathering.

Concours International de Pibroc'h (Piobaireachd) organisé par Le Festival Interceltique de Lorient 2015

Callum Armstrong:

Callum has been making quite an impression on the piping scene, not just in Soctland but elsewhere in Europe as well. The following his taken from his website callumarmstronmg.co.uk
Scottish piping like you never imagined it;
" a highly developed technique; innovation in instrument design and construction; and a radical and contemporary approach to composition that goes far beyond the usual sets of jigs and reels"

[Colin Blakey, The Waterboys]

"I studied recorder at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and I am a classically trained musician. I performed as a soloist with Trinity Baroque Orchestra during the London Handel Festival. For three consecutive years I won the Beryl Maggs Award for recorder and in my final year was awarded the Silver Medal for Early Music.
As a piper, I perform with Godalming, The Royal British Legion and Help the Heroes Brass Bands. I have performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall as guest soloist and appeared in Steven Spielberg’s film ‘War Horse’. I regularly work with Ceillidh Bands, I play at ceremonial occasions and special events.

This year I won the solo bagpipe competition at Chateau d’ Ars playing my own compositions, and the solo, composition, and bagpipe duo categories at the Lowland and Border Piper’s Society’s Annual Competition playing the smallpipes.I have recently been developing with Julian Goodacre.
